As continuing proof that British radio is just plain better, London production duo Gorgon City step into Rinse FM on the first Monday of every month and throw down from 11pm-1am. Each mix is unique and varied, and this one was particularly heavy in techno and tech-house. Filled with hidden gems and a new release or two, this round brought us their remix of a Damian Lazarus track that shifted the tempo from techno to jungle house as they build a massive vibe that takes us straight into a futuristic jungle rave where tribesmen dance around raging bonfires with hand drums as laser cannons blast beams of light through the canopy into the starry night. This mix has me hyped for their upcoming spring 2016 US tour with Rudimental and hungry for what the first Monday of next month will bring us.

Baauer made his BBC Radio 1 essential mix debut last week with a massive two hour set amidst cries from every corner of the music writing world that trap is dead. A shining example of what the genre used to be, and could still be, his essential mix is one of the most interesting and diverse 2 hours of trap you can find today. Similar to Bassnectars’ immersive music mixtapes, (another one of my favorites) his eclectic style shines and his samples range from Kanye to Purity ring to Kaskade. Never boring, and continuously surprising, this is one of the best essential mixes I’ve heard yet. With this release Baauer proves that trap music is alive and kicking and has solidified his place among the top DJs in the world. Sold.
If you’re in it for the drugs and not the music don’t listen to Sober Rob. If you enjoy a fusion of future bass and wonderful arrangement, listen to Sober Rob. Recently popular on Soundcloud, Sober Rob is part of a wave of new Boston producers. As Boston becomes more relevant in the U.S. music scene, it takes excellent production and mixing to stand out. Sober Rob’s music will intoxicate its listeners, which is ironic. Don’t miss out on Sober Rob’s most recent mix, promoting his headlining concert at ‘Sound Waves’, an electronic cruise featuring fresh future bass and trap artists on two different decks. Also be sure to check out Palmingo’s promo mix for Sound Waves, safari approved. Stay tuned for photos and coverage from Malaysian Safari as well. Sound Waves is April 1st – presale tickets are $15.

Ghastly is a new force in the house game – I recently saw Ghastly for the first time at Camp Bisco and was impressed with his DJ skills and song choice. This dude knows how to DJ. I took a peek at Ghastly’s soundcloud today and really dug some of his tracks – if I had to choose an artist Ghastly is very similar to, it is Jauz. Ghastly’s song repertoire includes both great remixes and originals. His remix of Bitch You Guessed It (dubbed ‘Bitch You Ghastly’) is great, as well as his original track ‘Shock Value’ with Dirty Doses. For the summer festival season, Ghastly has put out a killer mix called ‘Hello Festival Season. This mix shows off a variety of great future house as well as some awesome unreleased stuff from Ghastly including his collaboration with Jauz and another track with Brillz.

I heard the song ‘Party’ by JSTJR today and felt the need to give him some attention. JSTJR started out with a style called Zouk Bass, and has evolved into more of a trap/midempo style. Learn more about Zouk Bass here, it has kind of an interesting ethnic backstory. Originating in Boston, this DJ is very young and full of amazing potential. He has put out some very dope music lately, such as ‘Valhalla’ and ‘Gritz’, both available to download for free. I really like ‘Gritz’ – its style and simplicity remind me of Mr. Carmack . Listen to ‘Party’ and ‘Gritz’ below and check out JSTJR on social media for more cool music.

I hope we can all agree here that nothing is better than when Bassnectar drops a new track, and this one is no exception. Yesterday the man himself, Lorin, dropped a new remix of “Midnight” by Joker. Bassnectar is always spot on with his remixes – one of Hal’s favorites is his remix of ‘Lights’ by Ellie Goulding. His newest remix, of the song ‘Midnight’ by Joker (listen to the original here), is essentially the same song, but with a lot more bass and a more epic feel to it. Honestly, it’s A LOT like the original song, but props to Bassnectar for taking something good and making it better. In addition to the new track release, we also get the pleasure of viewing the new music video/visuals for the song from the Amorphous Lab. This video was
“directed, shot, and edited (VFX) by David Dutton. Dutton often teams up with Mari Takahashi, better known as Atomic Mari, part of the Youtube channel Smosh, and formerly a ballet dancer. Originally an art collaboration for their collective Hidden Fortress, the video was remixed into new life for this remix of Joker’s ‘Midnight’.”(bassnectar.net)
Bassheads around the world are jumping for joy along with Takahashi as they not only listen to the track in amazement, but relive Basslights and Smashville NYE where he debuted these never-before-seen-visuals live for the first time. I’ll never forget standing in the stands at the Hampton Colosseum (aka the Mothership) for Basslights and seeing these mind-blowing visuals for the first time, thinking “woah, something great is in store for us very, very soon.” And great it is! Check out the video here if you haven’t already!

Wuki is about 30 years old and, with support from OWSLA and Mad Decent, has brought his new, future style to the game as of late. Releasing a mix for Diplo and Friends is probably the best way to solidify yourself as an artist – with a huge listener base plus direct support from Diplo, a Diplo & Friends mix is basically gold for an underground (not much longer) producer such as Wuki. This mix features Wuki’s signiture sond plus music from Jesse Slayter, Doctor Jeep, and a load of new music, bootlegs, and remixes. Go to the bottom of this post for a full tracklist, and make sure to check out more of Wuki’s mixes here.
